How do British Ribena blackcurrants differ from other blackcurrants e.g. those grown in Eastern Europe? The makers of Ribena have invested lots of money and work into developing specific varieties with the UK growers. Eastern European blackcurrants tend to have higher acidities compared to British blackcurrants which means that they taste a bit different. Does Ribena really know where all their blackcurrants come from? Yes! Ribena knows every one of its growers, many of them have been growing Ribena blackcurrants for years. Where are Ribena blackcurrants grown? In 2004, 45 growers grew blackcurrants for Ribena on 63 farms across Scotland, Eire, East Anglia, southern England and the West Midlands. Each blackcurrant bush takes around three years to grow before the first full harvest of juicy blackcurrant fruit. Those hardy blackcurrant bushes will continue to provide Ribena with fruit for a further 12 years. More than 1,000 people are involved in growing, harvesting and squeezing the blackcurrants, so a big thank-you to everyone involved! When and how are the blackcurrants harvested? In the UK, we begin harvesting those ripe blackcurrants in mid July and this continues for around 6 weeks. A blackcurrant is only ready to be picked when it has turned from green to black, as we only like them when they are at their juicy best. Blackcurrants are usually picked throughout the day from dawn to dusk, rarely at night (as it`s difficult to see) and they are harvested using a specially designed machine that shakes the berries from the bush. How many blackcurrants does Ribena grow? Ribena grows 5000 acres of blackcurrants producing an amazing 13 billion blackcurrants every year. 5000 acres is equivalent to over 2450 International sized football pitches! If you put all of our blackcurrants side by side they would stretch more than 3 times around the equator (40,074km). Incredible! How should I drink and use Ribena as part of my diet? Ribena and Ribena Really Light should be enjoyed as part of a healthy, balanced diet and active lifestyle. They are not suitable for babies and toddlers under 36 months. In order to make your tasty glass of Ribena we recommend: Ribena squash: Dilute 1 part (30ml) with 5 parts water to give a 180ml serving. This applies to all 500ml, 330ml, 288ml, 250ml and 200ml ready-to-drink products in all flavours. Ribena squash products do contain artificial preservatives as we know that you like to keep the bottles out of the fridge and have plenty of time to enjoy Ribena. The preservatives ensure that once your Ribena squash is open it will stay nice and fresh and then you can continue to enjoy it for up to 4 weeks. Do you use artificial colours in Ribena? Most of our Ribena products either have no added colours at all, or are coloured with only natural ingredients like anthocyanins. Ribena Orange and Ribena Really Light Orange Tropical drinks contain the artificial colour, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is the orange pigment that gives oranges, red vegetables and carrots their colour. We have to use a form of beta-carotene which is similar to the natural version but which has been made artificially. What are Anthocyanins? Is it an artificial colour? Anthocyanins are the natural pigments that make things like blackcurrants purple and grapes black. Anthocyanins are natural colourants as opposed to being artificial colourants. To find out more about anthocyanins visit www.blackcurrantfoundation.com Do you use artificial flavours in Ribena? However, we are not able to guarantee that our products are free from nut ingredients as we can't guarantee that ingredients haven't been in contact with nut products at every point in the supply chain. Do you use any genetically modified ingredients? No. We have a policy that states we do not use GM ingredients in any of our Ribena products. We only work with suppliers who can demonstrate that a crop has been grown from non-GM seeds and that the identity of the ingredient can be certified as non-GM from cultivation through to final processing. Some of the juice drinks contain glucose fructose syrup (from wheat or maize). However, the European Food Safety Authority* advises that wheat-based glucose syrups are gluten-free** and as such are unlikely to cause an adverse reaction in individuals with coeliac disease. *Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (adopted on 19 October 2004). **provided that the provisional value of gluten considered by Codex Alimentarius for foods rendered gluten-free (currently 200mg/kg) is not exceeded. Yes, Ribena is halal for muslims. Why do you say that Ribena is not suitable for use for babies and toddlers under 36 months? Babies and toddlers under 36 months have special nutritional requirements. Drinks that are specially designed and marketed for them have to reflect these requirements and the food regulations which govern these products. Ribena is not specially designed and marketed as a drink for babies and toddlers. The on-pack directions for use therefore include the statement:
For babies below the age of 12 months we, together with health professionals, suggest that they should only be given water that has been boiled and then cooled, or specially formulated baby drinks. As a responsible manufacturer, we recommend that Ribena juice drinks are not suitable for toddlers under 36 months. This helps prevent toddlers 'filling-up' on juice drinks and then failing to eat their meals. Balanced nutrition is very important at this time to maintain their growth and development. All Ribena drinks can be consumed freely by older children (above 3 years) and adults as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. In which countries can Ribena be bought? Ribena is currently sold in 22 countries, including: Caribbean, UK, Eire, Denmark, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Yemen, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Nigeria, Mauritius, China, Hong Kong, Japan. So, even when you are on holiday you can enjoy your favourite juice drink! What’s new about Ribena Really Light? We have taken a huge step forward in developing this new blackcurrant product which, in our opinion, represents a breakthrough in taste for no added sugar blackcurrant drinks. Why have you got rid of Ribena Toothkind and Ribena Light and replaced them with Ribena Really Light? We are making these changes to simplify the Ribena range, making it easier for you to identify the best product for your needs. Ribena Really Light will appeal to a broad range of consumers because of its great taste, low calorie and ‘friendly to teeth’ benefits. What makes Ribena Really Light friendly to teeth? Ribena Really Light is friendly to teeth as it poses minimal risk of tooth decay and tooth erosion. Ribena Really Light is a no added sugar product that only contains the sugars naturally present in the fruit juice. These amounts have been shown to pose a minimal risk of tooth decay. Additionally, Ribena Really Light contains a unique, patented combination of food ingredients, including acidity regulating calcium salts that are very effective in minimising tooth erosion. Currently, no other soft drink on the market is using the same technology to reduce the risk of erosion, even those containing no added sugar. No added sugar – does that mean that there is any sugar in it? The only sugars present in Ribena Really Light are those naturally occurring in the fruit juice. No extra sugars are added. Blackcurrant Ribena Really Light contains approximately 0.5g of fruit sugars per 100ml and 14/3 kJ(kcal) of energy per 100ml of energy. Where should I keep my Ribena? Once opened, Ribena and Ribena Really Light ready-to-drink products should be refrigerated and used within 4 days as they do not contain preservatives.
